Florida - Florida Specialty License Plates with StreamlineJK License Plate Frame

Florida has one of the most prolific specialty license plate offerings for and state or province. Florida drivers have over 120 different themed license plates to choose from for a relatively low fee of $25 annually for most license plates (plus normal registration fees). The offering includes a large selection of university and colleges as well as all of the professional sports team in the state. Furthermore, there are 23 unique environmental themed license plate designs to choose from. The rest are a collection of armed services and veteran support themes as well as memorial funds and youth organizations. A full listing of the Florida specialty license plates can be found on the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles site.

The Florida criteria for creating a specialty license plate are fairly easy to hit compared to some states. The applying group must meet a general set of conditions and then must pre-sell 1000 license plates within 24 months to qualify for the plate to enter production. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles site has a fabulous tool for you to be able to look up any of the 120+ specialty license plates and see how many of each are active in any particular month. The link for it is available here or alternatively they provide a comprehensive listing of the most popular specialty license plates here.

Some of our favorite Florida specialty license plates are as follows:

Challenger/Columbia

The Challenge specialty license plate was initially issued to honor the fallen crew of the space shuttle Challenger. It ranks as the 25th most popular affinity license plate in Florida. The original Challenger license plate was first introduced in 1987 and has raised more than $28 million for the The Astronauts Memorial Foundation. In 2003 the license plate was updated to also bear the name of the space shuttle Columbia and honor its fallen crew. There have been many designs of this plate over the years. It originally was very similar to the iconic Florida green lettered plate with state image and the superimposed orange being replaced by an image of Challenger. The latest Challenger/Columbia plate

Save the Manatee

The purchase of the special Florida Manatee license plate provides funds dedicated to the ongoing efforts to sustain our manatee population. The revenue is deposited into the Save the Manatee Trust Fund, administered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The Save the Manatee plate is the 7th most popular specialty license plate in Florida.

Helping Sea Turtles Survive

The Helping Seat Turtles Survive License plate was first created in 1997 to promote the conservation and protection of Florida's sea turtles by providing a permanent funding source for the state's Marine Turtle Protection Program. Proceeds generated by sales of the Helping Seat Turtles Survive License plate go to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Marine Turtle Protection Program to support research and management activities related to Florida's sea turtles. In addition, a portion of the revenue is distributed to STC, which then redistributes the funding through the competitive Sea Turtle Grant Program to support turtle projects in the areas of research, education and conservation that benefit Florida sea turtles. This specialty license plate is the third most popular plate in the Florida Specialty License plate program.

Invest in Children

While only ranking 47th on the list of most popular Florida Specialty License Plates this license plate design's simple Florida inspired theme catches our eye and delivers a great message. Funds go to the Juvenile Crime Prevention and Early Intervention Trust Fund within the Department of Juvenile Justice. Based on the recommendations of the juvenile justice councils, the department uses the proceeds of the fee to fund programs and services that are designed to prevent juvenile delinquency. The department allocates money for programs and services within each county based on that county’s proportionate share of the license plate annual use fee collected by the county. A great cause and a good plate design.

University of Florida and Florida State University

No list of Florida specialty license plates would be complete without the top two - University of Florida and Florida State University. The University of Florida specialty license plate was first issued in 1987 and then redesigned in 1997. Funds from the plate go towards the university's academic enhancement fund. The plates design while colorful and on point for representing the Gators actually is one of the worst for placement of the graphics showing the university's name. The Florida State plate program  was also initiated in 1987. While being the second largest specialty plate program in the statethe Florida State program still delivered $1.8 million to the university's general scholarship fund in 2017. This shows the power of the license plate program in delivering funds to the program it supports.
